Mega Goal is a series of six English courses for secondary students that covers all the skills, knowledge, and strategies you need to succeed in learning English. Each level consists of different components that work together to provide you with a comprehensive and interactive learning experience. In this article, we will focus on one of these components: the PDF Mega Goal 1 Student Book. We will explain what it is, how it works, and why it is useful for you. We will also give you some tips on how to use it effectively and what benefits and outcomes you can expect from it.

Mega Goal 1: An Overview

Mega Goal 1 is the first level of the Mega Goal series. It is designed for students who have a basic knowledge of English and want to develop their skills further. It covers topics that are relevant, interesting, and motivating for students, such as careers, advertising, health, advice, global issues, etc. It also exposes students to different types of texts, genres, and media, such as articles, blogs, podcasts, videos, etc.

Mega Goal 1 has five main components that complement each other:

  • The Student Book, which contains eight units with four lessons each.

  • The Workbook, which provides additional practice for each lesson.

  • The Follow Up Book, which offers extra activities for reinforcement and extension.

  • The Interactive Book, which is a digital version of the Student Book with interactive features.

  • The Class Audio and Video, which accompany the Student Book and provide authentic listening and speaking practice.

In this article, we will focus on the Student Book, but we will also briefly mention the other components.

Student Book

The Student Book is the core component of Mega Goal 1. It contains eight units with four lessons each. Each unit has a theme that connects all the lessons. For example, Unit 1 is about "Big Changes" in the world and in our lives. Each lesson has a specific focus that relates to the theme. For example, Lesson 1.1 is about "Past World Events". Each lesson also has a clear objective that states what you will learn and do in that lesson. For example, Lesson 1.1 has this objective: "Talk about past world events and present effects".

The structure of each lesson is as follows:

  • Warm Up: This is a short activity that introduces the topic and activates your prior knowledge.

  • Presentation: This is where you learn new language items (vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation) through texts or dialogues.

  • Practice: This is where you practice what you have learned through controlled exercises.

  • Production: This is where you use what you have learned in freer activities that require communication.

  • Culture Note: This is an optional section that gives you some information about the culture or background of the topic.

  • Skill Focus: This is a section that develops one of your language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) through tasks that require comprehension or production.

  • Skill Strategy: This is a section that teaches you a strategy that can help you improve your language skill (for example, predicting, scanning, summarizing).

  • Skill Practice: This is where you apply the strategy you have learned in an activity that involves your language skill.

  • Skill Project: This is an optional section that gives you a chance to do a project related to your language skill (for example, making a poster, recording a podcast).

  • Mega Review: This is a section at the end of each unit that reviews what you have learned in that unit through exercises that test your language items and skills.

The Student Book also has some additional features that can help you with your learning:

  • Vocabulary Bank: This is a section at the end of each unit that lists all the new vocabulary words from that unit with their definitions and examples.

  • Irregular Verbs: This is a section at the end of the book that lists all the irregular verbs from all units with their forms (base form, past tense form, past participle form).

  • Glossary: This is a section at the end of the book that explains some words or expressions that may be difficult or unfamiliar for you.

  • Acknowledgments: This is a section at the end of the book that credits all the sources used in the book (texts, images, audio).

Workbook

Interactive Book

The Interactive Book is a digital version of the Student Book that you can access online or offline. It has all the same content and features as the Student Book, but with some additional interactive features that can enhance your learning. For example, you can:

  • Listen to the audio and watch the video with subtitles.

  • Record yourself and compare your pronunciation with the model.

  • Check your answers instantly and get feedback.

  • Highlight, annotate, and bookmark any part of the book.

  • Use the built-in dictionary and glossary.

  • Access extra resources and links related to the topic.

The Interactive Book is a great tool for self-study or blended learning. You can use it to review what you have learned in class, practice your skills at your own pace, or explore more about the topic.

Class Audio and Video

The Class Audio and Video are two components that accompany the Student Book and provide authentic listening and speaking practice. The Class Audio contains all the recordings of the texts and dialogues from the Student Book. You can listen to them on a CD player or online. The Class Video contains eight videos that relate to the themes and topics of each unit. You can watch them on a DVD player or online. Each video has a pre-viewing, while-viewing, and post-viewing activity that helps you understand and discuss the video.

The Class Audio and Video are important components that help you improve your listening and speaking skills. You can use them to listen to different accents and styles of English, learn new vocabulary and expressions, practice your comprehension and pronunciation, and express your opinions and ideas.
